Class Notes:

HiSET is a class to get ready for taking the high school equivalency test.

Course Syllabus:

Reading

Weeks 1 – 4 (Unit 1)

Community: Who are we? Where do we come from? How can we become a community of learners? How do we establish habits that will lead to academic success?

 

Weeks 5 – 9 (Unit 2)

Power: How is power structured? Who has power? Who has been historically excluded from power? What are our rights and responsibilities in a democracy?

 

Weeks 10 – 14 (Unit 3)

Culture and Traditions:

What do we value? How do we create legacies? How can we learn from the legacies of the past?

 

Weeks 15 – 18 (Unit 4)

Fears & Goals: What do we strive for? What do we fear? How will we overcome fears to reach goals?

 

Weeks 19 – 27 (Unit 5)

Overcoming: What lessons can we learn from those who fought for civil rights? How can we advocate for ourselves (and others) in the present using lessons from the past?

 

How have women been represented and treated

in history? How have women overcome challenges? How do we overcome our own challenges?

 

 

Weeks 28 – 33 (Unit 6)

Truth: Who do we trust (and how do we know)? What makes something or someone credible? How do we find credible information amid widespread misinformation/disinformation?

 

Weeks 34 – 40 (Unit 7)

Learning from the Past and Looking to the Future: How have industry and technology changed our world from past to present? How do these changes impact me? What changes do we wish to implement in our lives? What specific steps will we take to implement those changes?

Language Arts on a rotating basis

– Noun, subject, and verb recognition

Essay Writing

Course Rubric:

Beginner (1)

Grammar

No understanding of basic grammar rules. It is very difficult for student to pick the correct answer to a multiple-choice question.

Some understanding of basic grammar rules is evident. Fewer mistakes in regards to answering multiple-choice questions.

Student has a very good understanding of basic grammar rules. This student shows evidence that he or she will pass the HiSET Language Arts multiple-choice test.

Writing

Minimal knowledge of grammar rules. Writing has limited development of topic. Student would not pass the HiSET essay.

Writing is more developed and communicates to the reader more effectively. A better understanding of grammar rules, and the topic is evident.

Student shows a clear understanding of the topic and communicates effectively to the reader. Grammar rules are observed. Student is ready to pass the essay portion of the HiSET.

Reading

Reading is very difficult. Comprehension of material is not demonstrated. Student does not participate in class reading or do outside reading. It is difficult for student to pick the best answer on multiple-choice questions. Student would struggle to pass the HiSET Reading test.

Reading is difficult but improving. Student tries to participate in class reading and works outside of class on this skill. Comprehension is improving. Picking out the best answer in multiple-choice is still difficult. Student may pass the Reading HiSET st.

Reading skills are evident. Student actively reads on a regular basis both in and outside of class. Comprehension of what he or she is reading is demonstrated. Answering multiple-choice questions correctly is done on a consistent basis. Student will pass the HiSET Reading test.

Attendance

Student does not show up to class. Student may have come one or two times in last two months.

Student attends regularly but may miss a couple of times a month. Student is on time most of the time.

Student doesn’t miss class unless sick. Student is on time and eager to learn.
